How to use it
- Enter amount, measure, measuring spoons and your own weighed teaspoon in grams (optional).
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
grams = number of spoons × weight per spoon. In the source: 1 tsp = 4 g, 1 tbsp = 12 g. A packet is 7.2 g as USDA lists it. For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.
Example
Inputs: Amount = 2, Measure = Teaspoon, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source). Result: Weight in grams: 8 g; Grams per teaspoon used: 4 g.
Limits and caveats
- Figures are for a spoon leveled with a knife; a heaped spoon weighs clearly more.
- Figures are for active dry yeast as USDA lists it, not fresh (compressed) yeast, which is measured by weight.
Questions about this tool
How many grams are in a packet of yeast?
USDA lists a packet at 7.2 g, but store packets vary by brand, so go by the weight printed on yours.
Does instant yeast weigh the same as active dry?
USDA lists active dry yeast only. Instant yeast is finer and can differ a little per spoon, so weigh a spoon and use the optional box.
Does it change with metric measuring spoons?
Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
