How to use it
- Enter start time and end time.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
Duration = end time - start time in minutes; if the result is negative, 1440 minutes (24 hours) are added. Decimal hours = minutes ÷ 60.
Example
Inputs: Start time = 08:30, End time = 17:15. Result: Duration (H:MM): 8:45; Decimal hours: 8.75 h; Total minutes: 525 min.
Limits and caveats
- Measures one span of up to 24 hours; to add several spans use the time duration sum calculator.
- Equal start and end times give zero, not 24 hours.
- Daylight saving clock changes are not taken into account.
Questions about this tool
How do I count the hours from 10 PM to 6 AM?
Enter 22:00 as the start and 06:00 as the end. The tool adds 24 hours because the end is earlier, giving 8 hours.
What does 8.75 hours mean?
It is 8 hours 45 minutes, since 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes. Decimal hours are what you multiply by an hourly rate.
Does it subtract a break?
No, it measures the full span between the two times. Use the shift length calculator to take a break off.
