Letter frequency counter

Useful for simple cipher analysis, word games and studying how letters are distributed in a language.

Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter text, ignore latin letter case (a = a) and sort table by.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Each letter (any Unicode Letter code point) is counted, skipping diacritics, tatweel, digits and symbols. Share = letter count ÷ total letters × 100.

Example

Inputs: Ignore Latin letter case (A = a) = yes, Sort table by = Most frequent. Result: Most frequent letter: ل; Its count: 15; Total letters: 112.

Limits and caveats

  • Hamza forms and alef variants (ا، أ، إ، آ) count as different letters.
  • Letter order follows Unicode order, which is close to but not the same as the Arabic alphabet for hamza forms.

Questions about this tool

Are diacritics and shadda counted?

No. Diacritics are marks, not letters, so they are left out of the count and the shares.

Which letters are most common in Arabic?

In most texts alef and lam lead because of the definite article. Paste a long text here to check.

Can I use it to break a substitution cipher?

Yes. Comparing letter frequencies in the ciphertext with typical frequencies in the language is a basic step in solving simple substitution ciphers.
