How it is calculated
Volume per bed (m³) = length × width × height (in meters) × fill %. Total = volume × number of beds. Bags = liters ÷ bag size, rounded up.
Example
Inputs: Bed length = 240 cm, Bed width = 120 cm, Soil height = 30 cm, Number of beds = 2, Fill level = 100 %. Result: Soil needed: 1,728 L; In cubic meters: 1.728 m³; Bags: 35.
Limits and caveats
- Fresh soil settles after watering; many people buy 10 to 20% extra.
- Assumes a rectangular bed with straight sides.
Questions about this tool
How deep should a raised bed be?
Leafy greens do fine in 15 to 20 cm, while tomatoes and root crops prefer 30 cm or more.
Do I measure inside or outside?
Measure the inside of the bed; board thickness can cut the volume noticeably in small beds.
Why a fill level?
Most people leave a few centimeters empty below the rim, so you can enter 90% instead of a full fill.
