How it is calculated
Rolls = (length × width × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)) ÷ roll area, rounded up.
Example
Inputs: Length = 10 m, Width = 5 m, Roll area = 1 m², Waste allowance = 5 %. Result: Rolls: 53; Lawn area: 50 m²; Area with waste: 52.5 m².
Limits and caveats
- Curved shapes need more waste, up to 10 or 15%.
- Roll sizes differ between farms, so ask your supplier for the area.
Questions about this tool
How big is a turf roll?
It varies by supplier, for example 1 m² or 0.5 m². Multiply roll length by width if the area is not stated.
How much waste should I allow?
About 5% for plain rectangles and 10% or more for lawns with beds and curves.
How soon should I lay it?
The same day if you can; stacked rolls heat up and wilt quickly, especially in hot weather.
