How it is calculated

  • Diversity naturally falls as text gets longer, so compare texts of similar length.

Questions about this tool

What does lexical diversity mean?

It is the share of distinct words among all words. A higher value means less repetition and a wider vocabulary.

In what form does each word appear in the list?

Each word appears as it was first written in the text, in order of first appearance.

Are "Hat" and "hat" two words?

No. Comparison ignores letter case, so they count as one word.
