How to use it

  1. Enter total rent, share of rent for common areas, room 1 area, room 2 area, room 3 area (optional) and room 4 area (optional).
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Room share = (rent × shared % ÷ 100 ÷ number of rooms) + (rent × (1 − shared % ÷ 100) × room area ÷ total room area).

Example

Inputs: Total rent = 6,000, Share of rent for common areas = 40 %, Room 1 area = 16 m², Room 2 area = 12 m², Room 3 area (optional) = 10 m². Result: Room 1 pays: 2,315.79; Room 2 pays: 1,936.84; Room 3 pays: 1,747.37.

Limits and caveats

  • The common-area share is something housemates agree on, not a fixed value.
  • Perks such as a private bathroom or balcony are not weighted, though you can add them to that room's area.

Questions about this tool

Why not split by room size only?

Everyone uses the kitchen and living room equally. Splitting part of the rent evenly is fairer to the person in the small room.

What common-area share should I use?

You can derive it from the floor plan: common area ÷ total area × 100, or agree on a number together.

How do I handle a room with its own bathroom?

Add the bathroom's area to that room, and its share rises automatically.
