How it is calculated

A mark is opening (“ or ‘) at the start of the text or after whitespace, ( [ { <, a dash or another opening quote; otherwise it is closing (” or ’). So an apostrophe inside a word becomes ’.

Example

Result: Result: She said “we’re open on Friday” and ‘see you’.; Marks converted: 5.

She said “we’re open on Friday” and ‘see you’.

Limits and caveats

  • Words starting with an apostrophe, like '90s, get ‘ instead of ’.
  • Designed for English; Arabic usually uses « ».
  • Do not run it on code, it breaks string literals.

Questions about this tool

How does it tell opening from closing quotes?

From the previous character: after a space or bracket it opens, after a letter, digit or punctuation it closes.

What happens to the apostrophe in don't?

It becomes ’ because it follows a letter, which is the typographically correct apostrophe.

Can I reverse it?

Yes, use the smart quotes to straight quotes tool.
