Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.
How to use it
- Enter text.
- The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
- Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.
How it is calculated
After NFC normalisation: each link starting with http or www counts 23; each emoji counts 2; every other code point counts 1 if it is in U+0000 to U+10FF, U+2000 to U+200D, U+2010 to U+201F or U+2032 to U+2037, and 2 otherwise. Remaining = 280 − length.
Example
Result: Post length: 79; Remaining of 280: 201; Status: Fits.
Limits and caveats
- Bare domains such as example.com may be counted by X as a 23-character link; this tool counts them as plain characters.
- The 280 limit is for standard accounts; X Premium subscribers get a longer limit.
Questions about this tool
Are Arabic posts limited to 140 characters?
No. Arabic letters weigh 1 like English, so the limit is 280. Scripts such as Chinese and Japanese weigh 2 per character.
Why does a link count as 23 characters?
X wraps every link with its t.co shortener, so a link always takes 23 characters whatever its real length.
How much does an emoji count?
Each emoji counts as 2, including compound ones such as flags or skin tone variants.
