How it is calculated

grams = number of spoons × weight per spoon. In the source: 1 cup = 128 g. The teaspoon and tablespoon figures are derived by volume from the listed one (1 tbsp = 3 tsp, 1 cup = 48 tsp). For metric spoons the weight is multiplied by the volume ratio: 5 ÷ 4.929 for a teaspoon and 15 ÷ 14.787 for a tablespoon, about 1.4% more.

Example

Inputs: Amount = 3, Measure = Tablespoon, Measuring spoons = US spoons (as in the source). Result: Weight in grams: 24 g; Grams per teaspoon used: 2.667 g; Source: USDA FoodData Central (SR Legacy), "Cornstarch" (FDC ID 169698): 1 cup = 128 g.

Limits and caveats

  • Figures are for a spoon leveled with a knife; a heaped spoon weighs clearly more.
  • USDA lists the cup only (128 g), so the spoon weights are derived by volume: 128 ÷ 16 and 128 ÷ 48.

Questions about this tool

How many grams are in a tablespoon of cornstarch?

8 g, from the USDA cup figure of 128 g divided by 16 tablespoons.

Is cornflour the same as cornstarch?

Yes. Cornflour in the UK and much of the Arab world is cornstarch, not yellow cornmeal.

Does it change with metric measuring spoons?

Slightly. The figures are for US spoons (4.93 mL and 14.79 mL); metric spoons of 5 mL and 15 mL hold about 1.4% more, so pick "Metric spoons" to adjust.
