Processing and privacy: The result is calculated inside your browser and your data is not sent to any server.

How to use it

  1. Enter number of dice, sides per die and target total.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

The ways to reach each total are built die by die: ways(t after i dice) = sum of ways(t - f after i - 1 dice) for each face f from 1 to s. Probability = ways / s^n.

Example

Inputs: Number of dice = 2, Sides per die = d6 (6 sides), Target total = 7. Result: Chance of exactly this total: 16.6667%; Chance of this total or more: 58.3333%; Chance of this total or less: 58.3333%.

Limits and caveats

  • It assumes fair dice where every face is equally likely.
  • All dice share one side count and no modifier is applied.

Questions about this tool

What is the chance of 7 with two dice?

6 ways out of 36, or 16.67%, the highest of any total with two dice.

What is the chance of 12 with two dice?

Only one way (6 and 6) out of 36, about 2.78%.

Why are totals not equally likely?

Middle totals have more combinations than the extremes: 7 comes from 6 combinations but 2 from only one.
