How to use it

  1. Enter gelatin sheets, sheet grade and powder bloom.
  2. The result appears straight away and updates as you edit.
  3. Copy the result, or copy a link that keeps the same values to share it.

How it is calculated

Powder = sheets × sheet weight × √(sheet bloom ÷ powder bloom), because gel strength scales with bloom and with concentration squared.

Example

Inputs: Gelatin sheets = 6, Sheet grade = Silver (2.5 g, 160 bloom), Powder bloom = 225. Result: Powdered gelatin: 12.65 g; Weight of the sheets: 15 g; Bloom factor: 0.8433.

Limits and caveats

  • Sheet weights and bloom values are typical figures and vary by brand, so use the pack values if given.
  • A powder bloom of 225 is a common assumption for supermarket powder; change it if you know yours.
  • Fresh pineapple and kiwi stop gelatin setting whatever the amount.

Questions about this tool

How much powder equals 4 gelatin sheets?

With gold sheets (2 g) and 225 bloom powder, about 7.5 g, close to one sachet.

What is bloom?

A number that measures gelatin gel strength; the higher it is, the less you need for the same set.

Why do sheet weights differ between grades?

Lower bloom sheets are made heavier so that each sheet sets roughly a similar amount.
