How it is calculated
Taxable income = income − deduction (standard or itemized). Tax = the sum of each rate (10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%) on the part inside its bracket for your status and year.
Example
Inputs: Tax year = 2026, Filing status = Married filing jointly, Annual gross income = 150,000 USD. Result: Federal income tax: 15,340.00 USD; Taxable income: 117,800.00 USD; Deduction used: 32,200.00 USD.
Limits and caveats
- Credits, state tax, AMT and capital gains rates are not included.
- It applies the brackets directly; IRS tax tables under $100,000 can differ by a few dollars.
