How it is calculated
From mark 1 up, °F = 250 + 25 × gas mark; mark 1/2 = 250 °F and 1/4 = 225 °F. °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
Example
Inputs: Gas mark = Gas mark 6 (400°F). Result: Temperature in Celsius: 204.4 °C; Temperature in Fahrenheit: 400 °F.
Limits and caveats
- The result is for a conventional oven; a fan oven is usually set about 20 °C lower.
- Recipes round Celsius, so gas mark 9 may appear as 240 °C while it is 246.1 °C.
